Morocco Expands Disability Support Programs with $36.6 Million Investment

Morocco is intensifying efforts to support its disabled community, with the Ministry of Solidarity allocating MAD 396 million ($36.6 million) for initiatives in 2024 aimed at children and individuals with disabilities. This commitment reflects the country’s broader strategy to enhance social inclusion and improve the quality of life for vulnerable groups.

During a parliamentary session, Minister Naima Ben Yahya revealed that 27,500 children will benefit from a newly launched support program. Additionally, 19,000 individuals will receive medical and technical aid, while 1,000 entrepreneurs with disabilities will gain assistance through projects funded by MAD 53.5 million ($5 million).

Holistic Approach to Disability Inclusion

The reforms are part of Morocco’s Integrated Public Policy for the Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2015-2025). This framework integrates disability concerns into national development strategies and ensures compliance with updated legislative and regulatory measures.

Minister Ben Yahya emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns, urging families to register the status of persons with disabilities so they can access critical government services. The government also introduced a new disability assessment system to facilitate preferential access to essential resources.

Disability Card: Transforming Access to Services

A major milestone in these efforts is the implementation of the disability card system in 2024. Approved earlier this year, the card grants holders enhanced access to financial aid, extended medical coverage through health insurance, and reduced or free transportation. It also opens doors to employment opportunities within the private sector, ensuring a comprehensive support network.

Engaging Stakeholders for the Future

Marking International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3, the Ministry is collaborating with civil society organizations to finalize the National Action Plan for 2025-2026. These consultations aim to gather insights, present findings, and foster collective action among stakeholders committed to advancing disability rights.

A Step Toward Social Equity

These measures underscore Morocco's dedication to social equity, aiming to empower disabled individuals and foster a society where everyone can thrive. The initiatives reflect the country's pursuit of an inclusive future, aligned with its broader social development goals.

By prioritizing these programs, Morocco reinforces its commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen.
