Moroccan Government Intensifies Social Dialogue with Labor Unions

In a concerted effort to bolster working conditions and foster a favorable atmosphere for employees, the Moroccan government has escalated its endeavors in social dialogue with prominent labor unions. Spearheaded by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, this initiative aims to address the legitimate concerns of the workforce through a series of meetings with union representatives.

On Wednesday, Akhannouch continued his discussions in Rabat by engaging with a delegation from the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM), led by Secretary-General Enaam Mayara. The discussions revolved around pressing issues such as pension reform, the enhancement of employee rights, reduction of taxes for the middle class, and an increase in the minimum wage.

According to a government press release, this latest round of social dialogue "reaffirms the government's commitment to collaborative and responsible action alongside its social and economic partners." Noteworthy was the presence of key ministers responsible for domains such as the economy, finance, labor, and skills development, underscoring the significance accorded to these negotiations.

Throughout the discussions, Akhannouch underscored the pivotal role of families and the labor force in shaping government policies. He highlighted recent salary improvements benefiting various worker demographics, along with increases in the guaranteed minimum wage (SMIG) and agricultural sector wages (SMAG).

The press release highlighted that the atmosphere during the debate was characterized by a "shared sense of responsibility," with Akhannouch reiterating the government's dedication to fulfilling the needs and aspirations of the workforce.

This ongoing dialogue was initiated with a meeting between the government leader and the Moroccan Labor Union (UMT), and will progress with subsequent engagements involving the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT) and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM).

The social dialogue initiative reflects the government's commitment to institutionalize constructive engagement with social and economic partners, aligning with the vision outlined by His Majesty King Mohammed VI. As Morocco endeavors to strike a balance between economic advancement and workers' rights, these discussions are poised to shape the landscape of labor relations in the country.
