Merz warns SPD against coalition with Die Linke in Berlin

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned the Social Democratic Party (SPD) against joining a coalition government with Die Linke in Berlin, escalating tensions within Germany’s governing landscape after the Left Party’s strong performance in the capital’s state election.

According to German media reports, Merz made the warning during a closed meeting of the parliamentary groups of his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU). He reportedly referred to the political consequences the SPD could face if it cooperates with Die Linke, describing the potential outcome in particularly harsh terms.

The remarks come after the September 20 election to Berlin’s House of Representatives, in which Die Linke emerged as the strongest party. The Left Party secured around 25.7% of the vote, followed by the CDU with about 19% and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) with roughly 16%. The Greens and SPD also secured representation, leaving no single party with enough support to govern alone.

The result opened the way for negotiations over a possible three-party coalition involving Die Linke, the Greens and the SPD. Such an alliance would represent a significant political shift for Berlin and could place Die Linke in a leading role in the city-state government.

Merz has also called for an end to internal debates within the conservative bloc over the so-called “firewall” separating mainstream parties from Die Linke and the AfD. He has argued that the key issue is recognizing the lack of common political ground with both parties, rather than reopening discussions over the terminology surrounding cooperation.

The dispute also reflects Germany’s broader debate over coalition boundaries. The SPD and CDU are currently partners at the federal level, but their interests can diverge sharply at the state level, where local election results often require more complex coalition arrangements.

Berlin’s election has further highlighted the fragmentation of Germany’s political landscape. Die Linke’s gains were driven in part by concerns over housing affordability and rents, while the AfD also increased its support. Reuters reported that the election reflected growing pressure on Germany’s established political parties as voters turned toward both the left and right.

For the SPD, any decision to enter a coalition led by Die Linke would therefore have implications beyond Berlin, particularly given the party’s participation in Merz’s federal government. The coming coalition discussions are expected to test how far the Social Democrats are prepared to cooperate with the Left Party at the regional level while maintaining their position in the national government.
