Mercedes-Benz chief executive Ola Kallenius has said the German automaker is prepared to enter defense-related manufacturing if the move makes commercial sense. His remarks reflect a broader shift among European carmakers as the continent increases defense spending and industrial capacity in response to geopolitical uncertainty.

Kallenius said the global environment has become more unpredictable and that Europe must strengthen its defense capabilities. He indicated that Mercedes-Benz would consider contributing to that effort if it aligns with business objectives. He stressed that any involvement would depend on financial viability and strategic relevance rather than a full restructuring of the company’s core automotive focus.

The company has framed defense manufacturing as a potential but limited activity within its broader industrial portfolio. Kallenius said such work would remain a small part of the business compared with vehicle production, though he also described it as a possible growth niche. The comments come as European defense procurement accelerates and industrial suppliers explore new revenue streams outside traditional automotive markets.

Industry reports point to increased activity linking automakers with defense manufacturers across Europe. German defense group KNDS is reportedly in discussions to acquire an automotive facility near Berlin along with part of its workforce to support production of armored vehicles. Similar restructuring efforts are being explored across the sector as companies reassess underused industrial capacity and shifting demand patterns.

European automakers have increasingly diversified into defense-related supply chains as military budgets expand. Germany has significantly raised defense spending between 2025 and 2026, while European Union initiatives aim to reinforce production capacity across member states. Analysts note that most automotive companies are initially positioned as suppliers of components rather than full weapons systems manufacturers, reflecting a gradual rather than structural entry into the sector.
