Marseille municipal elections: Greens back new left-wing coalition

The Greens in France’s Bouches-du-Rhône region have voted in favor of renewing the left-wing coalition ahead of the 2026 municipal elections in Marseille. The vote signals support for the continuation of the Printemps marseillais alliance, while La France Insoumise (LFI) plans to run an independent candidate.

After the Communist Party earlier this month, the Greens confirmed on Tuesday evening their support for a unified left-wing list from the first round of the elections, scheduled for March 15 and 22, 2026.

Hassen Hammou, a member of the national executive board of Les Écologistes–EELV, announced on X that he had been elected leader of the Greens in Marseille, tasked with building a “first-round alliance with the left and citizen movements of the Printemps marseillais.”

Unlike in 2020, when the Greens initially ran alone before joining the left coalition between rounds, this time they will campaign under a joint banner with the Socialists and Communists. However, LFI will stand separately, with MP Sébastien Delogu expected to lead their list.

The coalition’s likely head of list remains Marseille’s current mayor, Benoît Payan, a former Socialist who has not yet formally declared his candidacy. On the right, Martine Vassal, backed by Les Républicains and Renaissance, is expected to lead a united conservative front, while Franck Allisio will represent the far right with support from Senator Stéphane Ravier.
