Mali and Burkina Faso impose entry restrictions on U.S. citizens in retaliation

Mali and Burkina Faso have announced new entry restrictions for U.S. citizens, invoking the principle of “reciprocity” after Washington recently added both countries to a list of nationalities barred from entering the United States.

In separate statements released on Wednesday and reviewed by AFP, the foreign ministries of the two West African nations said they would apply measures equivalent to those imposed by the U.S. authorities. The decision comes roughly two weeks after the American government updated its list of restricted countries.

Both Mali and Burkina Faso are governed by military-led authorities and have strengthened their political and security cooperation in recent years, particularly in response to diplomatic tensions with Western partners.

Officials in Bamako and Ouagadougou described the U.S. decision as unjustified and discriminatory, stressing that their response was intended to uphold national sovereignty and equal treatment between states.

The move is the latest sign of strained relations between Washington and parts of the Sahel region, where several governments have increasingly distanced themselves from Western influence and sought alternative international partnerships.
