Mali carries out two airstrikes against armed group positions in central regions
Mali’s armed forces have carried out two airstrikes against locations allegedly used by armed groups in the country’s central regions, according to a statement from the General Staff of the Malian Army. The operations took place on October 14 and 15, targeting sites in the Doura and Tongolo-Kora areas as part of ongoing military efforts to address security threats.
According to the military statement, the first strike was conducted on Wednesday in an area northwest of Doura. The operation followed intelligence gathering that reportedly identified a location sheltering several fighters, along with weapons and logistical equipment. The army said the site was believed to serve as a logistical base supporting the activities of armed elements.
A second strike was launched the following day against a gathering point approximately 1.5 kilometres west of Tongolo-Kora, in the Ségou region. The military said the operation followed a period of surveillance and site analysis intended to identify the location before carrying out the attack.
Authorities have not released a confirmed casualty figure or provided detailed information about the extent of the damage caused by the two strikes. According to the statement, reconnaissance and monitoring activities are continuing in the affected areas to assess the results of the operations and establish a final assessment.
Mali has faced a prolonged security crisis since 2012, with jihadist organisations and other armed groups carrying out attacks across several parts of the country. The violence has placed sustained pressure on state institutions and security forces, particularly in central and northern areas where armed groups have sought to expand their presence.
The broader crisis in the Sahel has been shaped by overlapping security, political and humanitarian challenges. Military operations remain a central component of Mali’s response, while persistent insecurity has disrupted local communities, restricted movement and complicated efforts to deliver essential services in affected areas.
The latest strikes underscore the continued military activity in central Mali as authorities seek to weaken armed groups’ operational and logistical capabilities. Further details are expected as surveillance teams complete their assessments, although the army has not announced when a final report on the two operations will be released.
