Kremlin urges caution over nuclear rhetoric after Trump's submarine remarks
The Kremlin has called for restraint in discussing nuclear matters following a statement from US President Donald Trump about repositioning American nuclear submarines. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Monday downplayed the significance of Trump’s comments, noting that US submarines are routinely on combat duty. He emphasized that Moscow had no intention of engaging in a public argument with Trump over the issue.
Tensions over nuclear posturing
Trump announced on Friday that he had ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to "appropriate regions" in response to remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Medvedev had warned of the risk of conflict between the nuclear-armed powers amid ongoing tensions over the Russia-Ukraine war.
The Kremlin’s response reflects its cautious approach to escalating rhetoric, with Peskov urging all parties to handle such matters responsibly to avoid unnecessary provocations.
Diplomatic engagement continues
Meanwhile, Peskov confirmed that Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is expected to visit Moscow soon. The Kremlin described the visit as “important and helpful,” signaling Moscow’s willingness to maintain dialogue despite strained relations. A potential meeting between Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin is under consideration, Peskov added.
The visit is seen as an opportunity for both nations to address key points of contention and explore avenues for reducing tensions amid an increasingly volatile geopolitical climate.
