Judge Frank Caprio, beloved for his compassion, Dies at 88

Judge Frank Caprio, widely admired for his empathy and kindness in the television program Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. His family announced his death in a Facebook post, noting that he died peacefully on Wednesday.

Caprio became a familiar face to millions when clips from his courtroom, aired between 2018 and 2020, went viral on social media. His approach, marked by compassion toward defendants often facing financial or personal hardships, earned him international recognition.

“Loved for his compassion, humility, and deep belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of thousands through his work in court and beyond,” his family wrote. “His warmth, humor, and kindness will leave an enduring mark on everyone who knew him.”

Followed by over three million people on Facebook, Caprio had shared health updates in recent months. In his last video, posted on August 19, he acknowledged his relapse and asked followers to keep him in their prayers.

Before gaining fame through television, Caprio served on the Providence City Council and held the position of municipal court judge from 1985 to 2023.

He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Joyce E. Caprio, and their five children.
