Israeli airstrike on Beirut southern suburbs kills at least three people
At least three people have been killed and 15 others injured following an Israeli airstrike on the southern suburbs of Beirut, according to a provisional toll reported by Lebanon’s Civil Defense and cited by national media sources.
The strike hit a residential building in the Ghobeiry district, an area located in the densely populated southern outskirts of the Lebanese capital. Reports indicate that the building was struck by two missiles, causing significant damage in a busy urban zone near commercial and residential infrastructure.
Israeli authorities stated that the operation was carried out in response to rocket fire from Lebanese territory toward northern Israel. In a joint statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said the strike targeted what they described as a Hezbollah command site allegedly used to plan attacks against Israeli civilians and military forces.
The Israeli military also released footage of the strike and claimed the site was associated with operational planning activities. According to Israeli media reports, the target may have included a senior Hezbollah communications official, although this information has not been independently verified.
Hezbollah had not immediately claimed responsibility for any recent cross-border attacks at the time of reporting, though earlier in the day Israeli authorities reported drone alerts in border communities following suspected launches from Lebanon. No casualties were reported on the Israeli side.
The latest strike marks a further escalation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, coming only days after previous attacks in the same area. The repeated exchanges of fire have intensified concerns about the risk of a broader regional confrontation.
The Iranian side reacted strongly to the incident, with a senior negotiator criticizing the United States, arguing that the escalation demonstrates a failure to uphold commitments in the region. The remarks reflect growing geopolitical tensions linked to the wider Middle East conflict dynamics.
The situation remains highly volatile, with continued military activity along the Israel-Lebanon border and increasing pressure on diplomatic channels to prevent further escalation.
