Iranian drone strikes on Azerbaijan raise fears of Caucasus conflict expansion
A recent drone attack by Iranian forces targeting Azerbaijan has heightened fears that the ongoing Middle East conflict could spill over into the Caucasus region. The strikes, which hit strategic infrastructure and sites linked to the local Jewish community in Baku, prompted Azerbaijan to announce retaliatory measures and evacuate its diplomatic staff from Iran.
The Azerbaijani security service reported preventing several planned terrorist acts and intelligence operations allegedly orchestrated by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), with seven Azerbaijani nationals arrested in connection with the incidents. Among the targeted locations were the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline—vital for regional oil exports—the Israeli embassy, a synagogue, and other Jewish community sites. Iran has not publicly responded to these accusations.
Authorities said four Iranian drones struck the Nakhchivan exclave, one hitting an airport, another exploding near a school, while a third was intercepted by air defenses. Four people were injured. President Ilham Aliyev described the attacks as "terrorist actions" and instructed the military to prepare for possible reprisals.
Analysts warn that the unpredictable chain of command within Iran’s military could affect escalation risks. While no ground offensive from Azerbaijan is expected immediately, defensive actions are likely. Experts emphasize that the decisions made by the IRGC may reflect long-standing hostility toward Azerbaijan, with strategic energy infrastructure, like the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, particularly vulnerable to drone strikes.
The situation underscores both the regional geopolitical tensions and the fragility of critical infrastructure, leaving Azerbaijan cautious yet prepared for any further developments.
