Gunman shot by police after opening fire at school in southern Thailand
An armed man opened fire at a school in southern Thailand on Wednesday before being shot by police, according to provincial authorities and law enforcement officials. No casualties have been reported at this stage, and an investigation is underway.
The incident occurred at Phatong Prathan Khiriwa School in Hat Yai, located in Songkhla province. Local authorities stated that the suspect entered the school premises carrying a weapon and appeared visibly agitated. Witnesses reported hearing two to three gunshots shortly after he entered the campus.
Police officers responded quickly to the scene and discharged their weapons to neutralize the suspect. Officials have not released further details regarding the attacker’s identity or possible motives.
Security measures have been reinforced in the area while investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Authorities emphasized that the situation was brought under control and that students and staff were secured shortly after the incident.
School-related security incidents remain relatively uncommon in Thailand, but the event has raised concerns about campus safety and emergency preparedness in educational institutions across the region.
