Guatemala Reaffirms Strong Stance on Morocco's Sahara Autonomy Plan

In a significant diplomatic development, Guatemala has reiterated its unwavering support for Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed Sahara region. This reaffirmation came during a recent session of the United Nations General Assembly's Fourth Committee, where Guatemala's Deputy Permanent Representative, Maria Jose Castillo, delivered a compelling address.

Castillo emphasized Guatemala's endorsement of Morocco's 2007 autonomy proposal, describing it as a "credible, realistic, and serious" foundation for resolving the long-standing territorial conflict. The Guatemalan diplomat praised the initiative as a viable path towards a peaceful, negotiated solution that respects Morocco's national sovereignty.

"Guatemala considers the autonomy initiative as the most credible and pragmatic foundation for achieving a compromise that ensures Morocco's territorial integrity," Castillo stated, underscoring her country's position on the matter.

In December 2022, the Central American nation opened a Consulate General in Dakhla, becoming the first Latin American country to establish a consular presence in Morocco's southern provinces. Castillo also expressed Guatemala's backing for UN-led efforts to mediate a resolution, highlighting the crucial roles of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy in fostering a balanced approach to the conflict.
