Global Left Gathers in Spain to counter rising far-right influence
Thousands of left-leaning activists, policymakers, and political leaders gathered in Barcelona over the weekend in an effort to redefine their political strategy and respond to the growing influence of far-right movements worldwide.
The event, supported by Spain’s ruling Socialist Party, brought together participants from more than 40 countries. Among the figures present was Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who called for renewed international cooperation and stronger efforts to address inequality and social justice.
Discussions focused on a wide range of issues, including proposals to reform global institutions such as the United Nations Security Council, as well as measures aimed at reducing wealth disparities, such as increased taxation on the ultra-rich.
Participants acknowledged that left-wing movements have faced challenges in recent years, particularly as far-right parties have gained support in various regions. Analysts at the gathering pointed to rising living costs and economic uncertainty as key factors influencing voter behavior, often exploited by populist narratives.
Speakers emphasized that to regain public trust, progressive forces must offer practical solutions to everyday concerns, including housing affordability, wages, and access to public services. There was also a call for clearer communication and stronger grassroots engagement.
The summit reflects a broader effort among left-leaning groups to rebuild momentum and adapt to a changing political landscape, where issues such as globalization, migration, and economic inequality continue to shape electoral outcomes.
