Germany has called for Türkiye to be included in the European Union’s emerging defense initiatives, arguing that the country’s strategic importance and long-standing role within NATO make its participation essential.

At a joint press conference in Berlin on Friday with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that Türkiye is a “geostrategic partner” whose cooperation is critical for regional and European security. He added that discussions on the matter are progressing constructively and underlined Türkiye’s consistent reliability as a NATO ally. Strengthening cooperation with Ankara, he said, is central to Germany’s aim of elevating bilateral ties, particularly in the field of security.
