Sébastien Migné impressed by Morocco’s tactical level after Gabon defeat

Morocco’s performance in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying opener drew praise from Gabon coach Sébastien Migné, who highlighted the strength of the hosts’ tactical approach after his side’s 2-0 defeat to the Lions of the Atlas.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, the French coach said Morocco had demonstrated a clear identity built around well-established playing principles, particularly in their use of combinations on the flanks.

Morocco’s tactical identity stands out

Migné said his technical staff had identified Morocco’s ability to create triangular passing combinations on the wings before the match. The first half, he suggested, provided a clear illustration of how effectively the Moroccan side could execute that approach.

The Gabon coach added that the level displayed by Morocco did not come as a surprise, saying the team performed in line with what his staff had expected ahead of the encounter.

For Gabon, the challenge was compounded by Morocco’s ability to maintain their structure while moving the ball efficiently and creating pressure through coordinated attacking sequences.

Young players add another dimension

One aspect of Morocco’s starting lineup that caught Migné’s attention was the number of young players selected by coach Mohamed Ouahbi.

The Gabonese coach said he had been somewhat surprised by the extent to which Morocco relied on youth from the outset. He nevertheless pointed to the country’s recent success at youth level as evidence of the depth available to the national team.

Morocco’s triumph at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup has reinforced attention on a generation of emerging players, and Migné said Ouahbi was right to make use of that talent and give young footballers experience at senior international level.

A new qualifying campaign opens the door to youth

For Migné, the beginning of a new continental qualifying campaign provides an appropriate setting for introducing younger players into the senior squad.

Playing the opening fixture on home soil also gives Morocco an opportunity to manage that transition in a familiar environment while simultaneously pursuing results in the competition.

The 2-0 victory over Gabon therefore offered Morocco both a positive start to their qualifying campaign and another indication of the depth available within the national setup.

Migné’s assessment also underlined the contrast between the two teams on the night: while Gabon were unable to find a way through Morocco’s defensive and tactical organisation, the hosts combined experience with emerging talent to secure the opening three points.
