Energy supply restored to Iraqi power plants after disruption
Iraq’s power plants have resumed receiving Iranian gas following a three-day disruption caused by regional tensions, Iraqi authorities announced on Saturday. The interruption had affected critical energy infrastructure, highlighting the country’s continued dependence on external energy sources.
The disruption came after strikes targeted strategic gas facilities in Iran, including those linked to the vast South Pars field, one of the largest natural gas reserves in the world. The incident temporarily halted gas exports to Iraq, which relies heavily on Iranian supplies to sustain its electricity production.
According to official statements, gas deliveries have now resumed at approximately five million cubic meters per day. Although this marks a return to operations, the volume remains below typical seasonal levels, particularly during winter months when demand increases significantly.
Iraq imports both electricity and natural gas from Iran, covering nearly one-third of its energy needs. Despite being a major oil producer, the country continues to face structural challenges in its energy sector, including outdated infrastructure and insufficient domestic gas processing capacity.
In recent years, Iraqi power generation has frequently been affected by fluctuations in Iranian gas supply. These interruptions have been attributed to technical issues, rising domestic consumption in Iran, and occasional delays in financial payments from Baghdad.
The latest disruption underscores the vulnerability of Iraq’s energy system to regional developments. It also renews calls for long-term solutions, including investment in local energy infrastructure and diversification of supply sources to ensure greater stability.
