El Niño poised to push global temperatures to new highs
Climate agencies and meteorological experts are warning that a potentially record-breaking El Niño event is taking shape across the Pacific Ocean, raising concerns about extreme weather and further increases in global temperatures. Forecasts suggest the phenomenon could become one of the strongest observed in more than a century, adding significant pressure to a climate already affected by long-term warming trends.
Confidence in the development of El Niño has risen sharply in recent months. The World Meteorological Organization estimates an 80% probability that El Niño conditions will emerge between June and August 2026. That likelihood climbs to more than 90% for the event to persist through at least November. The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued similar projections, placing the probability of El Niño forming during the middle of 2026 at 82%, while estimating a 96% chance that conditions will continue into early 2027. An updated NOAA assessment expected on June 11 could officially confirm the event’s arrival.
The growing concern is not only whether El Niño will develop, but how powerful it may become. Current projections indicate a 37% chance that the episode could reach the “very strong” category by late 2026 or early 2027. Sea surface temperatures in the key Niño 3.4 region may rise at least 1.5 degrees Celsius above average. Some European forecasting models suggest anomalies could approach 3 degrees Celsius by the end of the year, placing the event among the most intense ever recorded and potentially rivaling historic El Niño episodes.
Conditions beneath the ocean surface already point to unusual activity. Scientists have identified a large Kelvin wave moving across the equatorial Pacific, carrying water temperatures up to 7 degrees Celsius above average in some subsurface areas. Such anomalies are rare because temperatures at those depths usually change slowly. Experts warn that this stored heat could strengthen El Niño as it reaches the surface in the coming months.
International officials are urging governments to prepare for widespread impacts. A strong El Niño can intensify droughts in some regions while increasing the risk of heavy rainfall and flooding in others. It can also fuel marine heatwaves and elevate the likelihood of prolonged heat events on land. These effects could place additional strain on water supplies, agriculture, ecosystems, and public health systems across multiple continents.
The phenomenon is already influencing seasonal outlooks. Forecasts for the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season suggest lower-than-average activity because El Niño tends to increase wind shear over the Atlantic, making tropical storm development more difficult. At the same time, climate analysts estimate that 2026 could rank among the hottest years ever measured, with a growing possibility of challenging existing global temperature records if El Niño intensifies rapidly.
Historically, El Niño brings wetter conditions to parts of South America, the southern United States, the Horn of Africa, and Central Asia. In contrast, Australia, Indonesia, and parts of South Asia often experience reduced rainfall and heightened drought risk. Combined with the broader effects of climate change, even a moderate El Niño could amplify extreme weather patterns and increase heat stress across large areas of the world during the months ahead.
