Ecuador disqualifies two opposition parties months before local elections

In a decision that has intensified political tensions in Ecuador, the country’s electoral authority has disqualified two opposition parties just seven months ahead of local elections scheduled for November 2026.

The Consejo Nacional Electoral announced that the parties Construye and Unidad Popular no longer meet the legal requirements to maintain their official status. The institution defended its ruling, stating that the procedure followed all legal standards.

The move has been strongly criticized by opposition leaders, who accuse the government of political interference. Geovanni Atarihuana, leader of Unidad Popular, claimed that members of the electoral council are aligned with the ruling administration of President Daniel Noboa, describing the decision as politically motivated.

Both affected parties have confirmed that they will appeal the ruling in court, arguing that the decision undermines democratic competition ahead of the vote.

This development comes amid growing political polarization in Ecuador. Earlier, another major opposition force, Revolución Ciudadana, linked to former president Rafael Correa, was also temporarily suspended following legal investigations. Critics argue that such measures weaken political pluralism in the country.

President Noboa, who has been in office since 2023, has adopted a hardline stance on crime and drug trafficking, positioning himself as a strong ally in regional anti-narcotics efforts. However, his administration faces accusations from opponents of concentrating power and restricting opposition activity.

Ecuador continues to face significant challenges, including rising violence and economic instability, which are shaping the political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.
