Digital trends 2025: Internet hits 5.5 billion users as mobile dominates

The latest Digital Report by We Are Social and Meltwater reveals significant shifts in worldwide internet usage, mobile adoption, and social media engagement. As of 2025, global internet users have reached 5.56 billion, marking a 2.5% increase from the previous year. Users spend an average of 6 hours and 38 minutes online daily, showing a slight decrease from 2024.

Regional internet adoption shows notable disparities. Northern Europe leads with 97.7% penetration, followed by North America at 93.3%, significantly exceeding the global average of 67.9%. West Africa (42.5%) and Central Africa (33.6%) continue to experience limited internet access.

Google maintains its search engine dominance with 89.7% market share, while Google Chrome leads browser usage at 68.34%, ahead of Safari and Edge. The most visited websites showcase Google's continued prominence with 83 billion monthly visits, followed by YouTube (28.5 billion) and Facebook (12.3 billion). ChatGPT and Reddit have entered the top 10, garnering 3.53 and 3.5 billion monthly visits respectively.

Mobile usage continues to expand, with 5.7 billion smartphone users worldwide. Mobile devices generate 63.05% of global internet traffic, compared to 35.06% from desktop computers. TikTok remains the most downloaded application, followed by Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook, with newcomers Threads and ChatGPT joining the top 10.

Social media engagement has grown to 5.24 billion active profiles, up 4.1% from last year. Users spend an average of 2 hours and 21 minutes daily on social platforms, slightly less than in 2024. Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram maintain their positions as the most utilized social networks, while TikTok's popularity continues to surge among younger users.

Internet usage patterns in 2025 reveal diverse motivations: information seeking (62.8%), maintaining connections (60.2%), news consumption (55%), and entertainment through videos and streaming (54.7%). Additional popular activities include tutorial searches (51.1%), project inspiration (46.9%), and music streaming (46.7%). Online shopping research (45.2%) and travel destination exploration (38.9%) also remain significant user activities.

These statistics underscore the internet's integral role in daily life while highlighting persistent regional access disparities and evolving digital consumption patterns across platforms and devices.
