Congo launches disarmament campaign against genocide-linked militia
The armed forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have initiated a new campaign to disarm a militia linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, marking a significant step toward easing tensions with neighboring Rwanda.
The operation targets the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), an armed group based in eastern Congo that includes remnants of forces associated with the genocide. For years, Rwanda has called for the neutralization of this group as a key condition for achieving lasting regional stability.
According to Congolese military officials, the first phase of the initiative will focus on encouraging fighters to voluntarily surrender their weapons. Authorities emphasized that force could be used if necessary, but the priority remains a peaceful disarmament process to avoid further violence.
The move comes shortly after renewed diplomatic efforts between Congo and Rwanda, supported by international partners, aimed at reviving a previously signed peace agreement. Analysts say the success of this campaign could play a crucial role in reducing long-standing instability in the region.
