CNG vehicle demand rises sharply after fuel price increases in India
India’s leading car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki India Ltd has reported a significant rise in demand for vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), following recent increases in fuel prices across the country.
According to the company, bookings for its CNG models have increased by approximately 40% since fuel prices were raised. The surge reflects growing consumer interest in more affordable and fuel-efficient alternatives amid rising transportation costs.
In May, state-run fuel retailers in India increased petrol and diesel prices multiple times. These adjustments were introduced to offset higher crude oil costs, which were influenced by global supply pressures linked to geopolitical tensions, including the conflict involving Iran. As a result, operating costs for motorists have risen, pushing many buyers toward cleaner and cheaper fuel options such as CNG.
Maruti Suzuki, which dominates India’s passenger car market, has been expanding its CNG lineup in response to shifting consumer preferences. The company sees compressed natural gas as a key transitional fuel, offering lower running costs and reduced emissions compared to traditional petrol and diesel engines.
Industry analysts note that the rising adoption of CNG vehicles could accelerate India’s shift toward alternative fuels, especially in urban areas where fuel price sensitivity is high. However, they also highlight challenges such as infrastructure limitations and uneven CNG availability across regions.
