Ahmed Touizi of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) has been elected president of Morocco’s House of Representatives, securing 220 votes in a parliamentary ballot held on Tuesday.

Touizi emerged from the vote ahead of Driss El Azami El Idrissi, the candidate representing the opposition Justice and Development Party (PJD), who received 59 votes. A total of 369 votes were cast, including 90 ballots declared invalid.

The result places Touizi at the head of the lower house of Parliament, a key institution responsible for legislative work and oversight of government action.

Parliamentary Vote Determines New Speaker

The ballot reflected the participation of members of the House of Representatives in choosing their new president. Of the votes recorded, Touizi obtained 220, while El Azami El Idrissi received 59. The 90 invalid ballots accounted for a substantial share of the total votes cast.

The election was conducted in accordance with Article 62, paragraph 3, of Morocco’s Constitution and the internal regulations governing the House of Representatives.

A Key Role in Morocco’s Legislative Process

As president of the House of Representatives, Touizi will occupy a central position in the organization of parliamentary proceedings and the institution’s legislative responsibilities. The chamber plays an important role in debating and adopting legislation, as well as scrutinizing government policies within Morocco’s constitutional framework.

His election comes as the parliamentary institution continues to fulfil its responsibilities in representing citizens and contributing to the country’s political and legislative process.
