Citi appoints Barclays’ James Potts to lead shareholder advisory unit
Citigroup has appointed James Potts, a senior executive from Barclays, to head its shareholder advisory and activism defense division, according to an internal memo reported on Tuesday.
The move highlights ongoing competition among global banks to strengthen advisory services related to shareholder activism and corporate governance, an area that has grown increasingly important in international financial markets.
Potts joins Citi after nearly two decades at Barclays’ investment banking division, where he currently serves as head of mergers and acquisitions for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. His experience in corporate transactions and advisory work is expected to strengthen Citi’s global capabilities in managing complex shareholder situations.
In his new role, he will serve as managing director and head of Citi’s Shareholder Advisory & Activism Defense Group. The division covers multiple regions, including Europe, the United Kingdom, the Middle East, Africa, Japan, Australia, and the Americas.
Citi’s leadership stated that Potts will report to senior executives within its global mergers and acquisitions division. He will be based in London, where he currently resides.
The appointment reflects a broader trend in the banking sector, where institutions are expanding advisory services to help corporate clients navigate shareholder pressure, activist campaigns, and restructuring challenges.
