Authorities in California have declared a state of emergency following the rapid spread of an invasive species known as the golden mussel in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. Officials warn that the situation poses a serious threat to water systems, ecosystems, and infrastructure across the region.

The decision was made unanimously by local county supervisors, who described the situation as increasingly unmanageable. They have urged state leaders to expand emergency measures across California in response to the growing ecological risk.

The golden mussel, originally from Asia, is considered highly invasive. Once introduced into a new environment, it can spread quickly and disrupt local ecosystems by reducing plankton populations and altering water quality. Environmental experts say this can have cascading effects on biodiversity and aquatic food chains.

Beyond ecological damage, the species is also a major concern for infrastructure. Reports indicate that dense clusters of mussels can clog water pipes, irrigation systems, and dam valves. This can potentially lead to flooding risks and disruptions in water distribution systems, including those used for agriculture and urban supply.

Local officials have warned that the situation is already difficult to control in the delta region. Some experts believe that complete eradication may no longer be possible, making long-term management strategies essential.

State authorities have stated that efforts are underway to protect water infrastructure that serves millions of residents, while also attempting to limit further spread of the species. Coordination between local and state agencies is ongoing, with additional technical and financial support being deployed.

The golden mussel was first detected in California waterways in late 2024, prompting rapid regulatory action. It was later classified as a regulated invasive species, making its transport and introduction illegal. Inspection requirements for boats were also strengthened to reduce further spread.

Despite these measures, enforcement challenges remain. In one case, a boat operator was fined after falsifying inspection documents, highlighting the seriousness with which authorities are treating the threat.

Experts warn that invasive species like the golden mussel are becoming an increasing global concern, particularly as trade and climate conditions facilitate their spread into new ecosystems.
