Boko Haram Strikes Again: Dozens Slain in Northeastern Nigeria Village Attack

In a grim reminder of the ongoing insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, dozens of people were killed in a brutal attack by suspected Boko Haram fighters on Mafa village. The assailants, armed with rifles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), stormed the village on Sunday afternoon, setting fire to shops and homes.

According to Dungus Abdulkarim, a police spokesman in Yobe State where Mafa is located, the attack was carried out by approximately 150 suspected Boko Haram terrorists riding on more than 50 motorcycles. "They killed many people and burned many shops and houses," Abdulkarim stated, adding that the exact number of casualties is yet to be determined.

The attack is believed to be a retaliatory measure following the killing of two suspected Boko Haram fighters by local vigilantes. Yobe, along with two other states, has been at the epicenter of a 15-year insurgency by Boko Haram and other hardline groups, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced over 2 million people. The armed groups have bolstered their influence by collaborating with criminal gangs known as "bandits," who raid villages, kill and abduct residents, and burn homes after looting them.

Efforts to confirm the number of casualties are ongoing. Bulama Jalaluddeen reported that at least 81 people were killed in the attack. "Fifteen bodies had already been buried by their relations by the time soldiers reached Mafa for the evacuation of the corpses," Jalaluddeen said. "In addition to these, some unspecified number of dead victims from nearby villages who were caught up in the attack were taken and buried by their kinsmen before the arrival of the soldiers. Many people are still missing and their whereabouts unknown."

A military official, who accompanied the army’s commanding officer for Yobe to Mafa on Monday evening, revealed that the route to the village had been rigged with explosives, which troops managed to defuse. "We recovered 37 corpses and brought them to Babangida General Hospital," the official told Reuters, requesting anonymity due to not being authorized to speak to the media.

Modu Mohammed, a resident of Mafa, estimated the death toll to be over 100, noting that several more residents are missing and some corpses are still in the bush.

The attack underscores the continuing threat posed by Boko Haram and other extremist groups in the region, despite ongoing efforts by the Nigerian government and international partners to curb the insurgency. The incident also highlights the resilience and determination of local communities, who continue to face the brunt of these violent acts.
