Australian premier arrives in Indonesia for security pact
Australia’s Prime Minister arrived in Jakarta on Thursday evening, marking a significant step in strengthening regional security cooperation between Australia and Indonesia.
The visit comes as Canberra and Jakarta prepare to formalize a bilateral security agreement aimed at enhancing strategic coordination and stability in the Indo-Pacific region. The Australian leader was welcomed by Indonesian officials upon landing in the capital, underlining the importance both countries place on their longstanding partnership.
In a message shared on social media, the prime minister highlighted the warm reception and emphasized Australia’s commitment to working closely with neighboring countries to ensure national and regional security. He also noted that relations between the two nations are currently at one of their strongest points in decades.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is expected to host the Australian leader on Friday for high-level talks. The meeting is set to culminate in the signing of a common security treaty, reinforcing defense collaboration and political dialogue between the two governments.
Australia and Indonesia have maintained diplomatic relations since 1949, with cooperation expanding steadily across economic, political, and security domains. In recent years, shared concerns over regional stability have driven closer coordination.
The visit also follows recent efforts to broaden multilateral security frameworks. In December, Indonesia, Australia, and Papua New Guinea convened their first trilateral meeting of defense ministers, agreeing to deepen cooperation and hold annual discussions. Indonesia is scheduled to host the next trilateral forum in 2026, signaling a growing commitment to collective security in the region.
