Armenian opposition calls for vote recount after parliamentary elections
Armenia’s main opposition force has formally requested a recount of votes cast in the parliamentary elections held on June 7, following a decisive victory by the ruling party of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
The request was submitted to the Central Electoral Commission by representatives of the opposition alliance Strong Armenia, which finished second in the election. The group argues that the voting process may have been affected by irregularities and is seeking a review of the results in several polling stations.
According to the official preliminary figures, Pashinyan’s Civil Contract party secured nearly half of the votes, allowing it to maintain a dominant position in the country’s political landscape. Strong Armenia obtained just over one-fifth of the vote, while other opposition parties also expressed concerns about the conduct of the election and announced plans to challenge the results through legal channels.
The elections took place against a backdrop of growing geopolitical tensions and intense debate over Armenia’s foreign policy orientation. Since coming to power in 2018, Pashinyan has pursued closer cooperation with Western partners while maintaining relations with Russia, a long-standing ally that continues to play a significant role in the region.
Relations between Yerevan and Moscow have become increasingly complex in recent years. While the two countries remain linked through economic and security frameworks, differences have emerged regarding regional issues and Armenia’s international partnerships.
Political analysts note that the outcome of the election could influence the country’s future direction, particularly regarding its relations with both Russia and Western institutions. The electoral dispute is now expected to be examined by the relevant authorities, which will determine whether additional verification measures, including a recount, are necessary.
The situation remains under close observation as Armenia seeks to preserve confidence in its democratic institutions and ensure transparency in the electoral process.
