A Win for Diplomacy: CAF Sides with Mediation in Regragui-Mbemba Row
In a positive turn of events for Moroccan coach Walid Regragui and his Atlas Lions, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revised the suspension imposed on Regragui following his altercation with DR Congo captain Chancel Mbemba.
Regragui will now be allowed on the sidelines when Morocco faces South Africa in their Round of 16 AFCON clash scheduled for next Tuesday. CAF granted Regragui's presence after reducing the initial sanctions against the Moroccan coach. His original ban of four matches, including two suspended, along with a $5,000 fine, has been amended to just two games, with one suspended.
The Moroccan and DR Congo football federations reached an agreement to defuse tensions, with Mbemba refraining from leveling any racist accusations against Regragui before the CAF disciplinary committee, despite earlier conflicting reports.
This decision comes as a relief to the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, which had appealed the sanctions imposed on their coach by CAF following an investigation into the post-match incidents versus DR Congo. Federation president Fouzi Lekjaâ maintained that the punishment was "unfair" and argued that Regragui displayed no unsportsmanlike conduct. With the suspension reduced, Regragui and his Lions will now be focused on continuing their AFCON journey against South Africa on Tuesday.
