A village in Ireland saves its last pub through community effort

In County Limerick, the village of Kilteely has revived a cherished tradition by reopening its last remaining pub, thanks to the determination of local residents. Once home to seven bars, the village saw them disappear one after another, reflecting a national trend that has closed more than 2,100 pubs across Ireland since 2005.

Faced with the imminent closure of Ahern’s, the only bar left, twenty-six villagers decided to act. They pooled their savings, raising €300,000, and formed a syndicate to purchase the premises and its licence. The pub, now renamed The Street Bar, has been refurbished and modernized with the help of residents who contributed their professional skills – from electricians to carpenters, lawyers, and teachers.

“This is more than a business; it’s a social space where people can meet, celebrate, and share stories,” said Liam Carroll, one of the initiators. “We wanted to avoid losing our sense of community, so we became publicans.”

The initiative reflects a growing movement in rural Ireland, where communities are organizing to save essential meeting places from disappearing. Inspired by similar experiences in other counties, Kilteely’s project shows that with unity and creativity, traditional pubs can survive despite economic pressures, stricter alcohol laws, and changing lifestyles.

The Street Bar now stands not only as a place to enjoy a drink but also as a symbol of resilience and community spirit.
