Electric ferries set to bridge Morocco and Spain in groundbreaking maritime project

A pioneering zero-emissions ferry service will soon connect Morocco and Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar, marking a significant advancement in sustainable maritime transport. Spanish shipping company Baleària has unveiled plans for an all-electric fast ferry route between Tangier and Tarifa, establishing the first fully electric maritime connection between the two countries.

The innovative vessels, to be constructed at Spain's Armon Shipyard over a 32-month period, will feature powerful 16-megawatt electric engines enabling zero-emission crossings. The ferries will utilize rapid charging technology, requiring just 40 minutes to recharge their batteries at either port. As a safety measure, the vessels will also be equipped with backup diesel generators.

Adolfo Utor Martínez, Baleària's president, described the initiative as a "transformational milestone" for maritime transportation. The project includes substantial port infrastructure developments, with both terminals receiving advanced charging and docking facilities to support the electric vessels.

Beyond its environmental significance, the new maritime route is expected to strengthen economic ties between Morocco and Spain, fostering investment opportunities in the maritime sector while generating employment and promoting economic integration between the two nations.
