Morocco secures €530 million in landmark EBRD funding for 2024

In 2024, Morocco achieved a milestone by receiving €530 million in funding from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for 12 strategic projects. A significant 59% of this funding was directed toward initiatives promoting a green economy.

Among these projects, the EBRD provided a €200 million loan to support the construction of two desalination plants by a major industrial group. These facilities aim to enhance water security and significantly reduce freshwater consumption in industrial processes by 2030.

In the broader Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) region, EBRD investments reached €2.4 billion in 2024, an increase from €2 billion in 2023. Nearly half of these funds (49%) were allocated to green economy projects, while the financial sector and sustainable infrastructure received 55% and 21%, respectively.

Notably, gender equality played a central role in SEMED investments, with 60% of funds supporting related initiatives. Morocco contributed to this effort by allocating 50% of its funding to gender-focused programs. Additionally, 33% of the projects targeted reducing inequalities and strengthening human capital development. The EBRD also secured €514 million in co-financing to bolster these efforts.
