Direct Flights Between Libya and Morocco to Resume in 2025, Boosting Regional Connectivity
Morocco and Libya are set to restore direct air routes in 2025, marking the end of a decade-long flight suspension between the two North African nations. The announcement emerged from high-level talks in Rabat between Libyan Unity Government's Transport Minister Salem Al-Shahoubi and Moroccan Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayyouh.
The initiative extends beyond air travel, with plans for a direct maritime route to enhance bilateral trade. Al-Shahoubi expressed strong support for the maritime connection, viewing it as crucial for strengthening economic ties between the countries.
The transportation agreements coincide with Morocco's broader diplomatic efforts in Libya. Recent developments include Morocco hosting consultative meetings in Bouznika, which brought together 120 participants from Libya's House of Representatives and the High Council of State. During these discussions, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita emphasized the importance of excluding foreign intervention from Libyan affairs.
The Bouznika meetings yielded positive outcomes, with both Libyan institutions agreeing to continue dialogue focused on national reconciliation. The parties endorsed the implementation of election laws aligned with UN Security Council resolutions, demonstrating progress toward political stability.
This transportation initiative builds upon Morocco's consistent support for Libya's institutional development since the 2015 Skhirat Agreement. The restoration of direct flights represents a significant step in normalizing relations and facilitating business, diplomatic, and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
