Strengthening Bonds: Moroccan Parliamentary Speaker Attends Chad's Presidential Inauguration
In a significant demonstration of Morocco's dedication to enhancing collaboration and mutual prosperity within Africa, Rachid Talbi Alami, the esteemed Speaker of the House of Representatives, represented His Majesty King Mohammed VI at Chad's President-elect, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno's official inauguration ceremony. The ceremony, held in N'Djamena, Chad's capital, convened a multitude of foreign dignitaries, including heads of state, government leaders, parliamentary speakers, ministers, heads of delegations, members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Chad, and numerous other esteemed guests.
Accompanying Talbi Alami was Morocco's Ambassador to Chad, Abdellatif Erroja, as part of the Moroccan delegation present at this historic event. During the ceremony, Talbi Alami conveyed King Mohammed VI's sincere congratulations and well wishes to President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, reaffirming Morocco's steadfast commitment to enhancing cooperation with fellow African nations in the pursuit of development and shared prosperity across the continent.
In his heartfelt message, King Mohammed VI extended his sincere felicitations and expressed his hopes for the success of the newly elected Chadian leader, stating, "By placing their trust in you at this crucial stage of the democratic transition process, the Chadian people have demonstrated their appreciation for your dedication to safeguarding their paramount interests and fulfilling their aspirations for greater progress and prosperity."
President Deby Itno secured a decisive victory in the presidential elections, obtaining an impressive 61% of the vote, thereby solidifying his mandate to lead the nation. Nevertheless, the elections have encountered criticism from opposition leaders who have contested the results, alleging unfair and fraudulent practices.
Chad's transition to constitutional governance occurs amid heightened political tensions in the region, with the country being the first among several coup-stricken nations in West and Central Africa to endeavor a return to democratic governance. President Deby Itno initially assumed power in April 2021 following the tragic passing of his father, the late President Idriss Deby, who was assassinated by rebels.
While President Deby Itno's autocratic and stringent governing approach has elicited widespread criticism domestically and internationally, observers posit that the West may be inclined to overlook these concerns, perceiving Chad's autocratic and suppressive political system as a necessary defense against terrorism in the exceedingly fragile Sahel region.
