Meknes International Festival of Animated Cinema: A Celebration of Global Artistry and Moroccan Talents

In the historic city of Meknes, the Meknes International Festival of Animated Cinema (FICAM) has launched its 22nd edition, promising an extraordinary journey into the captivating realm of global animation. From May 10 to 15, under the auspices of King Mohammed VI and supported by the Aïcha Foundation in collaboration with the French Institute of Meknes, FICAM continues its mission to acquaint Moroccan audiences with the vibrant world of cinema beyond the mainstream.

Headquartered at the French Institute, the festival extends its reach to various venues across the Nouvelle Ville and the Old Medina, transforming historic spaces such as the Cinema Camera theater, Dar Jamaï museum, and Dar Lakbira into immersive stages for animated artistry.

This year's edition pays homage to the legacies of Moroccan animation pioneers Bill Plympton and Hamid Semlali, whose works have left an indelible mark on the industry. From Semlali's iconic advertisement for a canned sardine brand in the 1980s to Plympton's Academy Award-nominated short "Your Face" (1987) and collaborations with renowned artists like Kanye West and Weird Al Yankovic, their contributions have paved the way for future generations of animators.

In an exclusive interview with Morocco World News, FICAM director Mohamed Beyoud emphasized the festival's commitment to fostering a passion for cinema among Moroccan audiences, particularly the youth. Beyoud expressed the event's mission to create a platform where individuals of all ages can immerse themselves in global art and interact with artists worldwide.

Recognizing the transformative power of animation, FICAM provides numerous avenues for hands-on engagement with the craft. Attendees can participate in workshops, discussions, and studio stands, allowing them to interact directly with animation studios at the Animated Films Career forum. Additionally, the festival's traditional short film contest continues to discover and showcase young talent in Morocco.

This year's program boasts a special focus on Italian animation, featuring acclaimed director Alessandro Rak, who will host a master class on his first feature animation, "L'Art du Bonheur." Moreover, director Gianluigi Toccafondo and composer Andrea Martignoni will unveil the secrets behind their soundtrack process, offering a unique glimpse into the realm of animation scoring.

In a groundbreaking initiative, FICAM introduces the PanAfrican Workshop, spearheaded by film producer Sébastien Onomo and Special Touch Studios. These workshops cover professional and artistic techniques in 2D and 3D animation, video game art, and graphic novel creation, fostering a vibrant exchange of knowledge and creativity across the continent.

As the curtain rises on the 22nd edition of the Meknes International Festival of Animated Cinema, anticipation builds for a captivating celebration of global artistry and Moroccan talents, where the boundaries of imagination are pushed, and the magic of animation takes center stage.
