In Thailand, a two-month-old pygmy hippo named Moo Deng, which translates to "bouncy pig," is capturing hearts and generating excitement at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo near Pattaya. Since her birth in July, the zoo has seen a remarkable surge in visitor numbers, doubling the usual footfall as fans flock to see the charming creature.

However, the zoo's director, Narongwit Chodchoi, has issued a stern warning to visitors following reports of inappropriate behavior towards Moo Deng. Videos circulating on social media depict some guests throwing shellfish and splashing water on the young hippo in an attempt to rouse her from slumber. "These behaviors are not only cruel but also dangerous," Narongwit stated, emphasizing the need to protect the animals and maintain a safe environment for them.

In response to the mistreatment, the zoo has installed CCTV cameras around the enclosures and is prepared to take legal action against offenders. Narongwit advised that the best time to visit Moo Deng is during her waking hours to ensure a more respectful interaction.

Pygmy hippos, also known as dwarf hippos, are native to West Africa and are classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with estimates suggesting fewer than 3,000 remain in the wild. Moo Deng's petite stature and round physique have endeared her to many, sparking a fervent online following. Social media users express their obsession, with one declaring, "I’m obsessed with Moo Deng - I’ve been thinking about this queen all day long."

The Khao Kheow Open Zoo has adeptly capitalized on the buzz surrounding Moo Deng, with 128 of its last 150 social media posts dedicated to her. Merchandise inspired by the hippo, including a unique shirt and trouser set, is now available for purchase both at the zoo and online. Additionally, beauty retailer Sephora has launched a line of Moo Deng-themed blushes, allowing customers to "wear your blush like a baby hippo," with one product priced at THB 1,590 (approximately $47.70).

Moo Deng's popularity has transcended social media, making her debut on international television as a crew from Japan's All-Nippon News Network visited the zoo to cover her story. The Royal Thai Embassy has also joined in the celebration, sharing her charm on social media and describing her as "very energetic" and "soothing" in appearance.

As Moo Deng continues to capture the public's imagination, the zoo remains committed to ensuring her well-being while encouraging visitors to appreciate her from a distance.
