Thai Authorities Enlist Interpol in Search for Fugitive Suspect

Thai authorities have turned to Interpol for assistance in locating Bilal Chefinu, a Moroccan man accused of killing his girlfriend, a transgender woman named Thitikarn Dulikanon. The case has drawn significant attention as Chefinu remains at large, reportedly having fled to Hong Kong.

Dulikanon was discovered dead in her residence last Friday, bearing evidence of strangulation. She and Chefinu had shared a home, and surveillance footage captured the couple entering her beauty clinic on December 4. Chefinu was later seen leaving the clinic alone in Dulikanon’s car, which was abandoned near the airport. Police believe he boarded a flight to Hong Kong shortly after committing the crime.

The victim’s sister became concerned after not hearing from Dulikanon for two days, initially assuming she was traveling with Chefinu. A housekeeper eventually found her lifeless body, prompting an ongoing investigation.

Broader Context of LGBTQ+ Challenges in Thailand

Although Thailand has long been regarded as a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ community, societal and systemic hurdles persist. The country outlawed gender discrimination in 2015, but transgender individuals still face barriers to legally changing their gender, making access to jobs, education, and healthcare difficult.

Additionally, LGBTQ+ individuals remain vulnerable to violence, with incidents of physical and sexual assault frequently going unreported. A recent UN study revealed that nearly half of LGBTQ+ workers and students in Thailand have experienced discrimination.

Despite these challenges, Thailand made progress in 2024 by approving same-sex marriage legislation, though its full implementation remains pending.

This tragic case highlights both the dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals and the urgent need for justice. Thai authorities are urging international cooperation to bring the suspect to justice.
