Tragedy Strikes: School Bus Fire Claims Lives of Children in Thailand
A devastating incident unfolded on the outskirts of Bangkok, Thailand, where a school bus transporting primary school students and their teachers was engulfed in flames, leading to a heartbreaking loss of life. At least 20 children and three educators are feared dead after the bus caught fire during a field trip.
The bus, carrying 44 passengers from Uthai Thani province, was en route to Ayutthaya and Nonthaburi for an educational excursion when the fire broke out. Eyewitness accounts describe a scene of chaos as the blaze erupted, making it impossible for rescue teams to access the vehicle for several hours due to the extreme heat.
Images shared on social media depict the bus completely consumed by flames, with thick plumes of black smoke billowing into the sky. As rescue efforts progressed, Piyalak Thinkaew from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation reported that 23 individuals were unaccounted for—20 students and three teachers. The identification of the deceased remains challenging due to severe charring.
According to preliminary investigations, the fire likely ignited after a tire burst caused the bus to collide with a roadside barrier. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungruengkit noted that the vehicle was powered by natural gas, which is known for its flammability. He expressed concern over the safety of using such fuel in passenger vehicles.
Survivors included at least three teachers and 16 students, many of whom sustained serious burns. Medical professionals at Rangsit Hospital reported that some victims suffered extensive injuries, including facial burns that could lead to blindness.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra extended her condolences through social media, vowing that the government would cover medical expenses and provide compensation for families affected by this tragedy. “As a mother, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the families of the injured and deceased,” she stated.
This tragic event has reignited discussions about road safety in Thailand, a country notorious for its high accident rates, with around 20,000 fatalities annually according to World Health Organization statistics. The combination of unsafe vehicles and reckless driving practices contributes significantly to this alarming figure.
As investigations continue into this catastrophic fire, the nation mourns the loss of young lives and reflects on the urgent need for improved safety measures on its roads.
