Lebanon president rejects call with Netanyahu despite Trump announcement

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun refused to join a proposed phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, contradicting an earlier announcement by Donald Trump that the two leaders would speak for the first time in decades. The decision underscores persistent political barriers between Beirut and Tel Aviv despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Lebanese officials confirmed that no direct contact would take place with Netanyahu. Aoun instead held a separate conversation with Marco Rubio, during which he expressed appreciation for US efforts to secure a ceasefire. According to sources close to the presidency, Aoun consulted internally and was advised against engaging directly with Israel’s leadership, including guidance from parliamentary speaker Nabih Berri.

Trump had announced the expected call on his social platform, suggesting it would mark the first direct exchange between Lebanese and Israeli leaders in more than 30 years. Israeli officials also indicated that such a conversation was planned. However, Lebanese authorities quickly denied any knowledge of the initiative, stating they had received no information about a scheduled call.

The episode reflects ongoing misalignment between diplomatic messaging and political realities. Earlier in the week, confusion had also emerged after announcements of ambassador level talks, which Beirut initially said it had not been informed about. Those discussions eventually took place in Washington and marked the first high level engagement between the two governments since the early 1990s.

Fundamental disagreements remain unresolved. Lebanon continues to demand a ceasefire as a precondition for any direct negotiations, while Israel has rejected that position. Israeli officials maintain that military operations will continue until Hezbollah is disarmed, framing the campaign as a security necessity.

On the ground, violence has continued to escalate. Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley have killed more than 40 people within a 24 hour period. Air operations have also targeted key infrastructure, including bridges linking southern regions to the rest of the country. Lebanese authorities report more than 2,100 deaths and over one million displaced since fighting resumed on March 2, highlighting the growing humanitarian impact.
