Indonesia: New Food Poisoning Incident Undermines Free Meal Program

At least 750 students and teachers showed symptoms of food poisoning in Rembang, on the island of Java, after consuming a meal provided for free at their school. This incident comes just days after a similar occurrence and raises concerns about the health safety of a flagship program of President Prabowo Subianto.

Hundreds of Students Sick After School Meal

The scene was repeated Thursday morning at a school in Rembang, on the island of Java. In total, 725 students and 25 teachers reported health issues after consuming a meal provided as part of the national free meal program on Wednesday.

Reported symptoms are characteristic of food poisoning: diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. The situation was serious enough to cause a significant influx in the school's restrooms.

The school principal, Juhartutik, stated that the toilets were particularly strained, especially since two of them were already closed for renovation work.

An Iconic Program Under Pressure

Launched in January 2025, the free meal program is one of the main social measures promoted by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

Its goal is to provide meals to children and other beneficiaries in order to improve their nutrition and address dietary issues in the country.

However, its large-scale deployment has faced challenges. Health incidents have increased, fueling criticism against the operational modalities of the program.

Additionally, there are concerns about its cost and accusations of corruption, which further complicate the debate surrounding this public policy.

A New Episode Following Previous Poisoning

The Rembang incident occurs as another case of food poisoning recently affected hundreds of students, some of whom had to be hospitalized.

The recurrence of these events heightens worries about the conditions of preparation, transport, and distribution of school meals.

For a program relying on considerable logistical organization, managing the food supply chain is a critical issue. A failure at any point can quickly affect a large number of children.

The Challenge of Large-Scale Food Safety

The increasing number of beneficiaries makes health concerns particularly sensitive. Providing daily meals to a large school population requires ensuring the quality of ingredients, their preservation, preparation, and distribution simultaneously.

The incidents recorded in Java illustrate the consequences that a food issue can have in a school setting: several hundred people can be affected within hours.

Beyond the Rembang incident, the repetition of these cases risks becoming a political problem for the Indonesian government.

Between Social Ambition and Control Imperative

The free meal program remains a central measure of Prabowo Subianto's social policy. Its ambition is considerable, but its effectiveness also depends on the authorities' ability to ensure a high level of health control.

New poisoning incidents could thus accelerate calls for enhanced inspections and monitoring of the supply chain.

The government now faces a double challenge: to preserve the nutritional objectives of the program while ensuring that meals intended to improve children's health do not become a source of health risks themselves.

For families as well as for schools, trust in the program will largely depend on the authorities' ability to explain the causes of these incidents and prevent their recurrence.
