AI deepfakes of celebrities flood TikTok ads promoting scams

Fraudsters are using artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes of Taylor Swift, Rihanna and other public figures to promote fake reward schemes on TikTok, exposing growing weaknesses in how social media platforms handle synthetic media. The activity highlights the rapid spread of low-cost AI tools that enable large-scale impersonation.

The fraudulent ads manipulate real footage from interviews, red carpet appearances and talk shows. Scammers overlay cloned AI voices onto these clips to fabricate endorsements for nonexistent services. In one example, a synthetic version of Swift promotes a fake program called “TikTok Pay,” while a manipulated clip of Rihanna claims users can earn money by watching content and sharing opinions.

These ads often mimic TikTok’s official branding to appear credible. Users who click are redirected to external websites designed to harvest personal data. To hide visual flaws typical of AI-generated content, creators apply heavy stylistic filters that obscure lighting inconsistencies and lip-sync errors, making detection more difficult for average users.

The issue extends beyond TikTok. YouTube has removed more than 1,000 scam ads tied to a single advertising network that used deepfakes of Swift, Steve Harvey and Joe Rogan. These videos accumulated nearly 200 million views before being taken down. Meta has also acknowledged dealing with large volumes of fraudulent ads across its platforms.

Financial damage from deepfake scams continues to rise. A 2025 study found that social media fraud linked to synthetic media has caused losses worth hundreds of millions of dollars. Celebrity impersonation accounts for roughly 80 percent of the total financial harm associated with deepfake-related fraud.

Detection remains a major challenge as AI tools become more advanced. Voice cloning technology now produces near-professional results with minimal technical skill, lowering the barrier for scammers. Platforms are racing to respond. YouTube recently expanded a tool that allows artists and talent agencies to detect and request removal of AI-generated content using their likeness.

Experts advise users to remain cautious. Signs of manipulation include unnatural facial movements, mismatched audio and lip synchronization, and inconsistent lighting. Verifying any celebrity endorsement through independent sources remains essential before engaging with online offers.
