Cocoa price slump pushes chocolate makers back to traditional recipes

Chocolate manufacturers are beginning to reverse cost-cutting changes introduced during the cocoa price crisis of 2024, as global cocoa prices continue to retreat sharply from record highs. After months of reducing cocoa content, adding fillers and relying on compound coatings, some major confectionery groups are preparing to restore original recipes as market conditions stabilize.

The Hershey Company announced during an investor presentation in March that it plans to return to its traditional milk and dark chocolate recipes across Reese’s and other confectionery products starting in 2027. The decision follows criticism from consumers and members of the Reese family after several products were reformulated with cheaper cocoa substitutes during the supply crisis.

The backlash intensified when Brad Reese, grandson of brand founder H.B. Reese, accused the company of weakening the flavor profile of iconic products. Company executives later told investors that future Hershey and Reese’s products would align more closely with the brands’ original identities. Some reformulated products had reduced cocoa content to such an extent that they no longer met Canadian legal standards for milk chocolate, which require at least 25% cocoa solids.

Global cocoa markets experienced extreme volatility over the past two years. Cocoa futures nearly tripled in 2024 as poor harvests and supply shortages in West Africa disrupted the market. Prices later collapsed by roughly 75% from their peaks, falling to around $3,100 per metric ton in early 2026 after improved weather conditions boosted crop prospects across major producing countries.

The price decline has also created pressure across the chocolate industry. Barry Callebaut, the world’s largest chocolate producer, lowered its operating profit outlook in April, citing falling cocoa prices and excess production capacity. The company’s shares dropped sharply after the announcement as investors reacted to weaker earnings expectations and slowing industrial demand.

The downturn has delivered little relief to cocoa farmers in West Africa, where producers remain exposed to unstable pricing and weak purchasing demand. Côte d'Ivoire, the world’s leading cocoa producer, cut its farmgate cocoa price by about 60% for the 2025–2026 mid-crop season, reducing payments to 1,200 CFA francs per kilogram from 2,800 CFA francs during the main season. Ghana faces similar challenges as exporters struggle to absorb abundant global supply while chocolate manufacturers continue to reduce purchases.

Analysts expect a full recovery in cocoa demand to take several years. Farmers who suffered from low production volumes during the price surge are now confronting collapsing revenues during the market correction, leaving many producers under renewed financial pressure despite improved harvest conditions.
