4.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Peru-Ecuador border region

A moderate earthquake struck the Amazonian region along the border between Peru and Ecuador on Monday, prompting monitoring by authorities but causing no reported deaths or material damage at the time of the initial assessments.

The Peruvian Geophysical Institute said the earthquake occurred at 2:16 p.m., with its epicenter located about 112 kilometers west of Andoas in the Loreto region of northeastern Peru. The tremor was recorded at a depth of approximately 117 kilometers, limiting its effects at the surface.

Residents in Andoas reportedly experienced shaking corresponding to intensity III, considered relatively weak on the local intensity scale. No significant structural damage or casualties were immediately reported.

Ecuador's Geophysical Institute at the National Polytechnic School issued a somewhat different estimate, measuring the earthquake at magnitude 5.4 and placing its depth at around 84.8 kilometers. Differences between seismic estimates are common and can result from variations in monitoring networks, calculation methods and the location of seismic stations.

The latest tremor occurred in an area that has experienced several earthquakes in recent months. On September 10, Ecuadorian authorities recorded a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in northern Peru, followed by another 5.4-magnitude event in the border region. Earlier, on June 13, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake centered in Peru was felt in southern Ecuador, around 20 kilometers southwest of the Ecuadorian city of Macará.

Both Peru and Ecuador are located within the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active zones. The region stretches around the Pacific Ocean and is characterized by frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity resulting from the interaction and movement of several tectonic plates.

Peru has experienced a number of powerful earthquakes in recent years. On June 15, 2025, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck offshore near Callao and was strongly felt in Lima. Another major event occurred on June 28, 2024, when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit offshore near Yauca in the Arequipa region, causing damage to homes and triggering landslides.

Ecuador has likewise faced significant seismic activity. A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the coastal province of Esmeraldas on April 25, 2025, damaging buildings and roads and disrupting electricity supplies. On March 18, 2023, another magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck near the Gulf of Guayaquil, causing widespread damage and casualties.

The depth of an earthquake is an important factor in determining how strongly it is felt at the surface. Deeper earthquakes can sometimes produce less intense shaking in nearby populated areas, although their effects depend on several factors, including magnitude, distance from communities and local geological conditions.

The latest border-region earthquake highlights the persistent seismic risk faced by communities in western South America. Although no major consequences were reported from this event, authorities continue to monitor seismic activity because earthquakes in tectonically active regions can occur with little warning.

For Peru and Ecuador, regular seismic monitoring, resilient infrastructure and public preparedness remain essential tools for reducing the potential impact of stronger earthquakes. The latest tremor serves as another reminder of the geological forces shaping the region and the importance of maintaining emergency response capabilities.
