Denmark and China renew cooperation on green maritime technology

Denmark and China have renewed a bilateral agreement focused on cooperation in green maritime technology and shipbuilding, reaffirming their long-term partnership in the sector, China’s Ministry of Industry said on Tuesday.

The updated pact includes plans for joint research and development on ships powered by low- and zero-carbon fuels, as well as potential collaboration in the new energy vehicle industry. Chinese Industry Minister Li Lecheng highlighted Beijing’s readiness to deepen strategic alignment with Denmark and contribute to global efforts on green development during talks with Danish Business and Industry Minister Morten Bodskov.

The renewal comes at a sensitive geopolitical moment, as relations between Denmark and the United States remain strained following renewed remarks by President Donald Trump about gaining control over Greenland, citing security concerns in the Arctic, including China’s growing presence.

Nordic engagement with Beijing was further underscored by a concurrent visit to China by Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo. Finland plays a key role in the design and construction of icebreaker vessels critical to emerging Arctic shipping routes. Orpo expressed interest in continuing dialogue with China on both bilateral cooperation and international issues during his meeting with President Xi Jinping.

The renewed commitments by Denmark and Finland contrast with Washington’s increasingly confrontational stance toward China in the Arctic and green industries, positioning Beijing as a willing partner for Nordic countries pursuing sustainable maritime innovation.
