China urges US to “seriously” respect nuclear test ban

Beijing (AFP) – China on Thursday urged the United States to “seriously” respect the global ban on nuclear testing, after President Donald Trump instructed the Pentagon to resume testing of the country’s nuclear arsenal.

“China hopes the United States will seriously fulfill its obligations under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and its commitment to prohibit nuclear testing,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a regular press briefing.

Beijing called on Washington to take “concrete actions” to safeguard the international system of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and to help maintain global strategic stability.

The United States signed the CTBT in 1996 but has never ratified it. Trump’s recent order to prepare nuclear tests has raised international concern, with China and other countries warning it could undermine decades of progress toward global nuclear restraint.
