US-Spain tensions rise as European Union signals readiness to defend its interests
The European Union has indicated that it is prepared to take action to protect its economic interests and those of its member states following recent threats from US President Donald Trump against Spain regarding trade relations.
On Wednesday, representatives of the European Union stated that the European Commission is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to respond if necessary. According to an EU spokesperson, the Commission will ensure that the bloc’s interests remain fully protected and reaffirmed the union’s solidarity with all member states and their citizens.
Officials also reminded that the EU and the United States concluded a major trade agreement last year. European authorities expect Washington to respect its commitments while maintaining stable and predictable transatlantic economic relations that benefit both sides.
The tensions emerged after President Trump reportedly threatened to end commercial relations with Spain. The remarks came after the Spanish government declined a request from Washington to allow the use of two American military bases located in the Andalusia region as part of a potential military operation linked to the situation with Iran.
The facilities involved include the naval base in Naval Base Rota and the air base of Morón Air Base. These installations originate from a bilateral defense agreement signed in 1953 between the United States and Spain during the period when the country was governed by Francisco Franco.
In addition to the base dispute, Trump has criticized Spain for not increasing its military spending to 5% of its gross domestic product, a target promoted by Washington within the framework of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
The American president described Spain as uncooperative and suggested that Washington might reconsider its trade ties with the country. European officials, however, stressed that the EU remains committed to constructive dialogue while being ready to defend its economic interests if required.
