Moroccan lawyers intensify strike, paralyzing courts
The Moroccan Bar Association has announced the continuation of a total work stoppage by lawyers, following a meeting held on Saturday, January 31, 2026, in Rabat.
The association explained that the decision comes due to the absence of concrete measures from the government to address the profession’s demands. Lawyers are opposing draft law 23.66, which they consider incompatible with the rules governing their profession. They are calling for the withdrawal of the bill and demand that it be reconsidered in consultation with representatives of the legal community.
The Bar Association stated that the strike on January 17 was widely observed, reflecting the majority position of lawyers regarding the proposed reform. Meanwhile, the profession continues to boycott digital judicial platforms and suspend the payment of court fees via electronic means as part of ongoing actions. A press conference is scheduled for February 3 to outline the lawyers’ position and provide an update on the situation.
Additionally, the association plans to petition the Supreme Council of the Judiciary to explore ways of safeguarding the rights of citizens and ensuring the right to defense during this period. A national march has been scheduled for February 6.
No timeline for resuming work has been set yet, as lawyers await an official response that could allow dialogue to resume.
