Moroccan lawyers announce nationwide strike over justice reform dispute
Morocco’s legal profession is set for a week-long nationwide strike after a sharp escalation in tensions between lawyers and the Ministry of Justice over proposed reforms to the legal profession. The Association of Moroccan Bar Associations announced the suspension of professional services from June 15 to June 21 following a meeting in Rabat, accusing Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi of making unfounded and provocative statements against lawyers and their representative bodies.
According to the association, recent remarks made by the minister before Parliament are part of a broader pattern of criticism targeting the legal profession. The organization argues that these statements undermine the image of lawyers and challenge their constitutional role in defending rights and freedoms. It also contends that the government is attempting to justify unilateral decisions regarding the ongoing reform process without sufficient consultation with the profession.
The association strongly rejected what it described as accusations directed at lawyers and their institutions. It also defended the General Mutual Insurance Fund for Lawyers, describing it as a major social achievement that operates under the supervision of competent authorities and follows recognized standards of governance. The organization said official reports support its management practices and denounced what it called a continuing campaign aimed at discrediting the institution.
In response to the dispute, the association decided to formally alert the Head of Government about the minister’s statements. It also tasked its officials and representatives of the mutual fund with organizing a media campaign to address and rebut the allegations made against them.
The most significant measure announced is a warning strike lasting seven days, during which legal services will be suspended nationwide. The association described the action as an initial step and warned that additional forms of protest could follow if disagreements over the draft law remain unresolved.
By keeping its executive body in permanent session, the Association of Moroccan Bar Associations intends to closely monitor developments surrounding the reform. The confrontation between the legal profession and the Ministry of Justice signals a new phase of tension over changes to a profession that occupies a central position within Morocco’s judicial system.
