Lucas Philippe of France elected as Interpol president

The International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) has elected Lucas Philippe, a senior French police official, as its new president. The election took place during the 91st General Assembly in Marrakech, Morocco, on Thursday. Philippe will succeed Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi, who has held the position since November 2021, and will serve a four-year term.

In addition to Philippe’s appointment, Interpol also announced the election of several key officials: Wang Yong of China as Vice-President for Asia, Kazumi Ogasawara of Japan as a Delegate for Asia, Stefano Caravelli of Italy as a Delegate for Europe, Issam Fetoui of Tunisia, and Mohamed Ibrahim Amin of Kenya as Delegates for Africa.

The General Assembly, which began on November 24, brought together 886 participants from 179 member countries and 34 international organizations. Key discussions during the event centered on combating organized crime, cybercrime, and improving data protection. Interpol’s role in advancing global security cooperation and multilateral police work was a recurring theme throughout the assembly.

Morocco’s General Director of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), Abdellatif Hammouchi, opened the event with a speech emphasizing Morocco's dedication to fostering international security efforts. Hammouchi highlighted Interpol’s pivotal role in uniting law enforcement agencies worldwide to tackle transnational organized crime and other global security challenges.

This marks the second time Marrakech has hosted Interpol’s General Assembly, following the city’s hosting of the 76th session in 2007 under the theme “The Road to Security for a Safer Future.”

Morocco’s commitment to enhancing global security cooperation was also underscored during the event, with officials reiterating the country’s active participation in international coalitions against emerging security threats.
