Tragic Bombing Strikes Busy Mogadishu Café During Soccer Final

MOGADISHU, Somalia A bombing outside a bustling café in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, on Sunday resulted in the tragic deaths of at least five individuals, according to police reports.

The explosion occurred as patrons were engrossed in watching the European soccer final between Spain and England on a screen inside the café. Major Abdifitah Aden Hassa, the Somali police spokesperson, confirmed that a car laden with explosives detonated outside the establishment, causing the deadly blast. The attack also left at least 20 people injured.

Images circulating on social media, reportedly from the site, depicted a fire raging outside the café in the wake of the explosion.

Eyewitness Ismail Adan, speaking via phone, described the chaotic scene: "Some of the spectators got injured while trying to jump the perimeter wall of the café, and others got wounded in a stampede." He noted that most of the casualties were individuals on the street at the time of the blast.

The perpetrators behind this violent act remain unidentified as of now.

Mogadishu, and Somalia at large, has a history of attacks perpetrated by the Islamic militant group al-Shabab. This group staunchly opposes Somalia's federal government, which relies heavily on international military support to maintain stability.

However, the capital had enjoyed a period of relative peace in recent months. This calm was shattered on Saturday with an attempted jailbreak at a Mogadishu prison. The prison clash, which resulted in at least eight fatalities, involved inmates convicted of al-Shabab-related offenses engaging in a firefight with prison guards.

The Somali government is currently engaged in a high-stakes offensive against the extremist group, which the U.S. has characterized as one of al-Qaida’s most lethal factions. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has declared an all-out campaign against these extremists, who exert control over significant portions of central and southern Somalia and have been the target of numerous U.S. airstrikes in recent years.

This latest bombing marks a grim reminder of the ongoing challenges Somalia faces in its quest for peace and stability.
